Hansen Clarke: Controversy Over Race is Also About Honesty

"one-drop rule" here—it's also unrealistic for Clarke, who has indeed made political hay out of being a man of color, to expect voters to just overlook the issue altogether.

Clarke shouldn't run away from candidate forums or claim shock and offense. Just discuss the issue honestly and move on to the more important things. (And perhaps that's what he's doing in claiming that his mother was a black woman trying to pass…We'll see.)

Ultimately, though, he's right when he says that Detroit voters should focus more on the positions he takes on issues such as transportation, urban development and financial relief for a cash-strapped city.

Yes, race matters. But what people in this city need to know most about Hansen Clarke—or anyone else who asks for their vote—can't be learned from a birth certificate.
